ICA Panel on Spatial (re)presentation and (re)construction of culture (Ai Zhang)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

From: Ai Zhang aizhang79@gmail.com

I am looking for participants who would like to be a part of a panel being proposed for ICA in Germany 2006, Visual Communication Division that explores the communicative nature of space/place and how space/place metacommunicates with human beings. This panel is in response to the neglect that more often than not, space/place has been assumed as a background against which things happen.

The proposed panel looks at space/place as a medium whose visibility and visuality (re)present and (re)construct social and cultural values, at the same time, being constructed by these values. This perspective goes beyond the detached way of thinking of space/place to explore its communicative nature that is socially constructed by human beings residing in that visual environment. The proposer examines this interconnectedness between space and people from the lens of traditional Chinese housing - Hutong - to investigate how space constructs culture, at the same time, being (re)constructed by people living in that space/place.

Participants especially those with different cultural backgrounds are encouraged to share how their cultures' spatial (re)presentation and (re)construction facilitate and are facilitated by human interaction and communication.

If you are interested, please send me a brief summary of your paper or an abstract to aizhang79@gmail.com

Thanks,
Ai Zhang, University of Maryland, US
