COMMUNICATION TERMINOLOGY DEVELOPMENT AND STANDARDIZATION
Workshop at RCA/NCA Summer School (Rostov-on-Don, Russia, 2003)

Moderators: Tuzlukova Victoria Igorevna, Professor, Rostov State Pedagogical University,

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

The aim of the workshop is to combine practical experience in communication dictionary-making with an understanding of broader theoretical principles, such as
• communication terminology study and prelexicography work;
• terminology of communication theory and practice analysis process;
• writing communication dictionaries and dictionary entries in accordance with general lexicography principles;
• managing and running communication dictionaries projects;
• creating databases of standardized terminology and terminological databanks in the field of communication;
• building electronic communication dictionaries, communication dictionaries skills and awareness.

In search for adequate methodologies to co-ordinate international communication terminology in global and local cultures' context we view the problem of communication terminology ordering, systematisation, description, internationalisation and localisation as the problem of effective terminology analysis and standardization in context of interdisciplinary and professional communication, and adequate knowledge and experience transfer. We also reflect upon "network image" of international communication terminology, which is closely connected with communication knowledge simulation and necessity of the reflexive analysis of its spatial and temporary dynamics on national and international levels.

It is a well-known fact that any specialized discourse, though not altogether different from general language, has some specific features. They can be exploited even when we perform the deceptively simple task of reading a text written for expert-to-expert communication.

A communication lexicon, along with a tendency to create nominalizations and borrow foreign words, is one of the communication seldom-cited peculiar traits. We view knowledge of communication terminology in this context as an instrument enabling global scientific community to keep abreast of present-day developments in communication terminology characterised by a great variety of concepts, dynamism of term formation.

With these purposes in mind, the workshop intends to focus on the issue of considering additional terminological competence on the part of the specialists (besides their understanding of everyday language) that is topical, and that includes not just knowledge about concrete and abstract entities on communication, but also knowledge about how to describe and express communication acts.

In particular, the workshop encourages papers containing in-depth lexicographic analysis of communication language as a language in which theories of communication are constructed, with special features that make theoretical discourse within communication experts' community possible.

It also welcomes contributions, which provide grounding for producing lexicographic products in communication - from project planning and corpus of texts in communication development to the actual compilation and editing of dictionary text of all types.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Possible themes for contributions are

  1. All types of communication dictionaries and glossaries: monolingual and multilingual
  2. Communication dictionaries, glossaries and thesauri formats: traditional and electronic
  3. Communication dictionaries projects
  4. Communication dictionary specifications: users and uses
